Women’s Medical Respite

Our Mission: Women’s Medical Respite delivers holistic care in a safe and clean temporary home for women experiencing homelessness who are too ill to recover on the streets.

Our Vision: To sustain the healthy growth of Women’s Medical Respite by creating and delivering programs and services that help women who are unsheltered and medically vulnerable.

Core Organizational Values: Service, Health, Dignity, & Justice

Dedicated respite staff and volunteers work 24/7 to help women who are unsheltered in the Ozarks who need a safe, clean environment to recover from a medical event. Once women are cleared to be discharged from the hospital, they are told to rest, take time to recover, and attend follow up appointments. This is not possible for women without safe housing and transportation.

A local shelter would give them a safe place to sleep, but will require them to leave every morning at 7.

  • How will they keep their wound clean?
  • Where will they lie down during the day when they need to rest?
  • How will they follow through with medications and make it to follow-up appointments?
  • How can they find nutritious food?
  • How will the summer heat or the winter cold affect their recovery?

The WMR aims to bridge the gap between the hospital and the streets by providing safe, recuperative care services to promote successful recovery from illness, injury, surgery, and other medical conditions.
